Petroleum Licensing

The keeping of petrol must be authorized by a licence and must accord with any conditions attached with the licence. It is the responsibility of the Building Control Department to ensure that all filling stations and private storage sites are licensed.

If a developer is constructing a new site an application to the Council must be made before any work on site is started. The application should be accompanied by a site plan (approx 1:100), showing the locations of tanks, pipe work, metering pumps, dispensers, drainage systems, buildings and other structures.

Work should not be started until the Building Control department has agreed the proposed arrangements in writing.

Application for a licence must be sought annually and is valid from April to March. The application form must be accompanied with the appropriate fee and an electrical certificate from a NICEIC approved electrical contractor.

Building Control Officers will visit the filling stations/sites with a view to deciding whether or not the first grant or subsequent renewal of a license is appropriate and what conditions should be attached to that licence.
